Summer mentoring program makes a difference . During the Summer of 2003, Joann Grayson sponsored a program in which our Psychology Majors worked with ten children who were under the care of local social-services agencies. The children participated in a dance program that involved choreographing and performing original dances for residents at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. They also completed some volunteer work at the SPCP, went on a trip to a Museum, and had some fun at the local pool, Kline's Ice Cream Shop, Luray Caverns, the Zoo, horseback riding, etc. Our students contributed a total of 230 clock hours of time to these children, and they learned a lot in the process. Service learning helps our students and our community.

The Food Fight sponsored by our Psychology Peer Advisors was tremendously successful! $2962 was collected plus about 200 pounds of canned goods. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and Mercy Corps is able to provide many dollars worth of food for each dollar donated, so the net result will be $44,060 worth of food aid will be available to those who need it as a result of the Food Fight event! That is a HUGE amount of support. This single event by a small group of students, encouraging the generosity of others, clearly will have a huge impact on many people in the valley and around the world. Congratulations Peer Advising on a job well done!

Peer Advisors , Psi Chi and Psychology Club members participated in this year’s Relay for Life, an campus-wide event that raises money for cancer research. Collectively psychology students raised about $2,500!
