Miller Hall Update

The $13,900,000 renovation of Miller Hall as the new home for the Department of Psychology is complete and the Department of Psychology moved in on December 17, 2007.  The interior of this building has been totally remodeled and will bear little resemblance to it’s former design.  The building is being redesigned primarily as a home to the Departments of Psychology and Political Science, and some facilities within the building are being developed for Graduate Psychology, Sociology, and the College of Science and Math.

The middle floor of Miller Hall is the central location for the Department of Psychology.  Offices for full- and part-time faculty and graduate assistants as well as our administrative offices Peer Advising office are all be centrally located on this one floor.  The floor also includes a computer lab, several classrooms and meeting rooms, as well as offices for our student organizations and graduate assistants.

The biggest change that our department will experience as a result of the move is the development of newly equipped laboratories for student and faculty research.  Specialized laboratories have been developed for each of the following types of research:

  • Visual Perception & Performance
  • Auditory Perception
  • Cognitive Science
  • Behavior Analysis
  • Biofeedback
  • Social Psychology
  • Child Development
  • Cultural Psychology
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Neuroscience

The labs include a human research suite (25 rooms) and an animal research suite (16 rooms).  The facilities and equipment will tremendously enhance the ability of the Department of Psychology to provide opportunities to students to conduct laboratory-based student research.

While the area around Miller Hall underwent substantial renovation, the exterior walls of Miller Hall exterior retained essentially the same appearance.  A dditional windows were added bringing natural light into faculty offices that line the outside walls of the building.

In December, 2006 the doorways to future classrooms were set, but clearly more work is needed before these rooms will be ready for occupancy.
