2008-2009 Academic Year Service Activities

Craig Abrahamson is serving the third term as member of the Executive Board and Chairman of the Membership Committee of the International Society for Explorations in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (ISETL).  He also works as a trainer for Team River Runner a kayaking program for amputee veterans with post traumatic stress disorder symptoms. Dr. Abrahamson volunteers every other weekend with the Oakland Medical Clinic providing psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families with social, physical, and emotional trauma.

Jeff Andre worked with lawyers in Delaware and Maryland on accident and civil court cases, providing expert opinions on visual perception-related issues.  Jeff serves as a textbook, journal article, and website reviewer for the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied and Oxford Publishing Company Visual Perception Consultant.

Suzanne Baker serves as the Chair of the Recruitment, Retention and Public Relations Committee of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP Division 2 of APA). Also with STP, she serves as a member of the Executive Committee, and has served on several task forces, including the Task Force on Collaboration with APS and Task Force on Membership Issues. She is also a reviewer for STP’s Office of Teaching Resources in Psychology. She also worked with the Educational Testing Service as an AP Psychology Exam Table Leader. She has been certified as a consultant for the American Psychological Association’s Departmental Consulting Service.  In February 2009, Dr. Baker served as an external reviewer for Western Carolina University’s Undergraduate Psychology program and Master’s of Science in General Psychology.

Kenneth Barron served on the Editorial Consulting Boards for Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and for the Journal of Experimental Education.

David Daniel is the Managing Editor and board member for the Mind, Brain, and Education Journal.  This journal was named the 2007 Best New Journal-Social Sciences & Humanities by the Association of American Publishers’ Professional & Scholarly Publishing Division. Dr. Daniel serves as the Chair of the Teaching Committee of the Society for Research in Child Development. He also accepted a second term as the Chair of the Teaching Committee for the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation Governing Council. David is an Ex-Officio board member of the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology.

Kimberly DuVall-Early is a reviewer for the John W. Santrock’s text A Topical Approach to Life-Span Development.

Bill Evans serves as President of the International Network on Personal Meaning (INPM).  The INPM is dedicated to advancing health, spirituality, peace and human fulfillment through research, education, and applied psychology, with a focus on the universal human quest for meaning and purpose.  (See http://www.meaning.ca/). Bill has been elected to the Board of Directors for the American Association of Ethical and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC), a division in ACA (American Counseling Association).

Pam Gibson serves as a board member for the Chemical Sensitivity Foundation.

Joann Grayson serves as a board member for Habitat for Humanity 2005-2008 and on their Family Selection Committee. She is a member of the Pilot Club.

Michael Hall is serving as the program committee chair for the Annual Meetings of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC) that is holding its meeting at Concordia University in Montreal in July 2007. He also was a member of the Psi Chi Honors Society Steering Committee for the Southeastern Region.

Jessica Irons serves on the Long Range Planning Committee, G. Stanley Hall and Harold Kirk Wolfe Nomination Committee, Excellence in Teaching Awards Committee, Grants Activities Taskforce, and is Chair of the Communication Task Force for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association).  Dr. Irons also serves as a committee member for the Virginia Association of Behavior Analysis (VABA) planning committee.

Arnie Kahn is the Book Review Editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly.  He serves the Society for the Psychology of Women (APA Division 35), as a member of the Tangri Memorial Award Committee, a member of the Book Series Editor Search Committee, and a member of the Newsletter Editor Search Committee. Dr. Kahn is on the search committee for a new Secretary/Treasurer for APA Division 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues). He serves as an editorial board member for the journal Sex Roles.

Ulas Kaplan presented a talk on “Perspectives in Human Development and Motivation” to JMU’s Psi Chi chapter. He is also a part of JMU's Bridge Program, which helps prepare high school seniors for college. This year he co-taught General Psychology at Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia.

Natalie Lawrence is serving as the Chair of the Planning Committee for the Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology (ETOP). The next conference will be held in June 2009. She is also a part of JMU's Bridge Program, which helps prepare high school seniors for college. This year she co-taught General Psychology at Clarke County High School in Berryville, Virginia.

Matt Lee is currently serving as the two-year co-chair for the Asian American Psychological Association on its convention Volunteer Committee, working to facilitate networking and convention-related service activities for undergraduate and graduate students. Matt is also continuing as an editor for the APA journal Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. This year, Matt gave presentations on integrating diversity with psychology for the JMU chapter of Psi Chi, Psych Club, and also the JMU chapter of ABPsi.

Monica Reis-Bergan works with the Boys & Girls Club: Plains Unit as an advisory member, and coordinator of their Health Fair. She also works with Plains Elementary School coordinating reading tutors, organizing the Health Fair ESL, and supporting Title 1 reading and Field Day.

Cathy Roberson volunteers at the First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen. Cathy also volunteers regularly at Camp Still Meadows’ Therapeutic Horse Riding program for special need/handicapped children/adults, and participates in their week long summer camp programs. She is also a member of Sisters in Hope whom donate to local or abroad charity. She also volunteered for the Salvation Army bell ringing this winter.

Bryan Saville is a member of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology’s (STP Div. 2 of APA) Teaching Awards Task Force, Awards & Grants Task Force, and Course Buyout Working Group. He is also the Vice President for Awards and Recognitions, a member of the Executive Committee, and serving as the Chair of the Teaching Excellence Awards Committee for STP. In 2008, Dr. Savillebegan a 3-year term as the Associate Editor for the journal Teaching of Psychology, where he is also a section editor of “The Generalist’s Corner.” He also serves on the board of directors of the Southeastern Association for Behavior Analysis (SEABA), and as the program Co-chair for the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis (VABA).

Sherry Serdikoff is serving a 3-year term as the Applied Behavior Analysis track representative to the Program Committee of the Eastern Psychological Association, and was asked to serve as Chair of the Program Committee for the 2009 and 2010 conferences. Dr. Serdikoff is President elect of APA Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) and will begin serving her term as President Elect in January 2009. She also serves as the President of the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis, and the Webmaster for the Southeastern Association for Behavior Analysis. Dr. Serdikoff is also on the Board of Editors for The Behavior Analyst Today. Locally, she serves on the planning committee, and grand price judging committee of the Shenandoah Valley Regional Science Fair.

Michael Stoloff is the webmaster and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology. He is on the Board of Directors of the Association of Heads of Departments of Psychology. He has been certified as a consultant for the American Psychological Association’s Departmental Consulting Service.

Cheryl Talley served as the science committee chair for the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (APA Division 45), and is a member of their Biennial National Conference Planning Committee.  Dr. Talley is a member of the Advisory Board for the Center of Justice and Peace Studies at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU). She serves on the Frontier Culture Museum’s Governing Board, and as a Co-Chair of the subcommittee charged with the creation of the new African Village exhibit.

Tracy Zinn was elected an Advisor of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies during the 2007 Annual Meeting of the Trustees held October 6, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois.  The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, founded in 1981, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the scientific study of behavior and its humane application to the solution of practical problems and the prevention and relief of human suffering.  She also serves as the Program Coordinator for the Teaching Institute for the Association for Psychological Science through 2011. She is a member of the Teaching Awards Committee, AP Review Committee, and Co-chair for the Recruitment & Involvement Task Force for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP). Dr. Zinn also serves as a consulting editor for the journal Teaching of Psychology, and as a liaison between the Organizational Behavior Management Network and STP. She is program co-chair for the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis and is serving as a program reviewer for both the Society for Industiral/Organizational Psychology (APA Div. 14), and Behavior Analysis (APA Div. 25). Dr. Zinn serves as the faculty advisor for Gamma Sigma Sigma, a service sorority of JMU.
