JMU Psychology wins “Culture of Service” award. The American Psychological Association Board of Scientific Affairs announced that the Department of Psychology at JMU was one of two winners of their 2008 Departmental Award for Culture of Service in the Psychological Sciences! This award is given to departments that “show a pattern of support for service from faculty, demonstrating that service to the profession is an integral part of training, mentoring, and service to the discipline.” This award was presented to the department at a meeting of the leadership of the American Psychological Association in Tempe, Arizona on October 4, 2008. At the ceremony our department was commended for the leadership and service of our faculty in professional organizations, at our university, and to our community. We were also commended for the quality and volume of the community service completed by JMU Psychology Majors. The award comes with a $5000 monetary award. Our faculty have agreed to use the award for three purposes: We donated $2000 to the Peer Advising Scholarship fund. We donated $1500 to the James O. Benedict Scholarship Fund, and we donated $1500 to support participation by High School teachers of psychology in the Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology (ETOP), a regional conference sponsored by our department.
