2007 - 2008 Academic Year Service Activities
Craig Abrahamson is serving the second of a 3-year term as a Board Member of the International Society for Explorations in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. He also works as a trainer for Team River Runner a kayaking program for amputee veterans with post traumatic stress disorder symptoms. He presented “Understanding People who are Different” at the JMU alternative Spring Break Leadership Training Program, and “The Role of the Endocrine System in Emotional Responses” to the University Studies Open House.
Jeff Andre worked with lawyers in Delaware and Maryland on accident and civil court cases, providing expert opinions on visual perception-related issues.
Kevin Apple participated in JMU’s Hillel and Center for Multicultural Student Services’ Holocaust Remembrance Week and presented “How Genocide Happens.” He served as a consultant regarding program assessment to the Department of Psychology at St. Olaf college in Northfield, MN. He also presented “Teaching Large Classes” as a workshop for the JMU New Faculty Orientation.
Suzanne Baker hosted Second Life JMU Faculty Virtual Open House November 2, 2007. She served as the Chair of the Recruitment, Retention and Public Relations Committee of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP Division 2 of APA). Also with STP, she served as a member of the Executive Committee, Newsletter Working Group, Working Group on Members-Only Benefits, and Working Group on Executive Director Duties. She also worked with the Educational Testing Service as an AP Psychology Exam Table Leader.
Kenneth Barron served as a member of the Editorial Consulting Board for Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin as well as Journal of Experimental Education.
David Daniel, who will be joining our department in Fall 08, is the Managing Editor for the Mind, Brain, and Education Journal that was named the 2007 Best New Journal-Social Sciences & Humanities by the Association of American Publishers’ Professional & Scholarly Publishing Division.
Bill Evans, in August 2007, presented “Inspiring leadership and teamwork” to the JMU Transfer Orientation Assistants and the keynote address, “Thriving at JMU!,” during orientation to all new JMU transfer students. He made several invited presentations to students in James Madison University Dormitories in September & October 2007 on alcohol use among college students. In Februrary 2008 he presented “Building community in organizations” at the JMU Student Organizations Annual Leadership Conference. Dr. Evans gave an invited address at the JMU Hunger Banquet, “What is the need? What can I do? What can you do?” Also, he was invited to speak at the JMU Chi Sigma Iota Initiation and Induction Ceremony speaking on “Becoming a ‘maximum impact’ person.” Dr. Evans serves as President of the International Network on Personal Meaning (INPM). The INPM is dedicated to advancing health, spirituality, peace and human fulfillment through research, education, and applied psychology, with a focus on the universal human quest for meaning and purpose. Working with the Psychology Peer Advisors Dr. Evans initiated the first annual Special Olympics “Day with the Dukes”, organized the 5th annual Food Fight Against Hunger, and served as Team Leader for the 8th annual JMU Relay for Life.
Pam Gibson served as a board member for the Chemical Sensitivity Foundation.
Joann Grayson continues to serve as a board member for Habitat for Humanity 2005-present for the Family Selection Committee. She is a member of the Pilot Club. She presented a workshop on “Innovative ideas for challenging populations” for the fall conference of the Virginia League of Social Service Executives; and presented “Fracture in the family: Child abuse in the United States” at JMU’s Honor Symposium.
Michael Hall is serving as the program committee chair for the Annual Meetings of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC) that is holding it’s meeting at Concordia University in Montreal in July 2007. He also was a member of the Psi Chi Honors Society Steering Committee for the Southeastern Region.
Jessica Irons served on the Long Range Planning Committee, G. Stanley Hall and Harold Kirk Wolfe Nomination Committee, Excellence in Teaching Awards Committee, and Grants Activities Taskforce for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association).
Arnie Kahn, presented “Pushing on the Pillow” as the keynote address at JMU’s Lavender Graduation. He also served as a member of the Tangri Memorial Award Committee, and as an editorial board member for the journal Sex Roles.
Natalie Lawrence served on numerous committees and task forces in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. She also served as a Reviewer for Teaching of Psychology. She is serving as the Chair of the Planning Committee for the Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology (ETOP), co-sponsored by JMU and the American Psychological Association and held June 2008. She presented a training workshop for part-time faculty on teaching General Education Psychology, and also taught a course in General Psychology at Clarke County High School.
Brian Saville member of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology’s Teaching Awards Task Force and National High School. Also a member of Standards for Psychology Task Force. Beginning 2008 Brian will serve a 3-year term as the Section Editor for “The Generalist’s Corner” in the journal Teaching of Psychology. He also serves on the board of directors of the Southeastern Association for Behavior Analysis (SEABA), and as the program Co-chair for the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis (VABA).
Sherry Serdikoff serving the first of a 3-year term as the Applied Behavior Analysis track representative to the Program Committee of the Eastern Psychological Association, asked to serve as Chair of the Program Committee for the 2009 and 2010 conferences. Dr. Serdikoff was elected the new chair of the CISAT Graduate Council. She also served as a member of an APR External Review Team for the JMU Department of Biology Masters Program.
Michael Stoloff served as a member of the external review team for an Academic Program Review of the Department of Psychology at Hampton Sydney College, February 2008. He will serve as an external reviewer for an Academic Program Review at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in June 2008.
Cheryl Talley presented “Making a Difference for Health and Human Services Students” for JMU’s Building Multicultural Competency Workshop. She was asked by JMU’s Center for Faculty Innovation to appear on a video titled “Best Teaching Practices – Improving Teaching with Textbooks” using concept mapping to introduce text books. She served as the science committee chair for the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (APA Division 45), and was a member of the Advisory Board for the Center of Justice and Peace Studies at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU). Also with EMU, she presented “Organizational Leadership” the “Anatomy of Holistic Trauma Healing.” In conjunction with the Rockingham County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program she presented “Leadership and Service,” and with the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce presented “Multi-cultural Challenges and Opportunities.” She serves on the Frontier Culture Museum’s Governing Board, and as a Co-Chair of the subcommittee charged with the creation of the new African Village exhibit.
Tracy Zinn was elected an Advisor of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies during the 2007 Annual Meeting of the Trustees held October 6, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois. The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, founded in 1981, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the scientific study of behavior and its humane application to the solution of practical problems and the prevention and relief of human suffering. She was also the Program Coordinator for the Teaching Institute for the Association for Psychological Science. She is a member of the Teaching Awards Committee, AP Review Committee, and Co-chair for the Involvement Task Force for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP). She also serves as a consulting editor for STP.
