2007-2008 Academic Year Grants

Kenneth Barron received JMU’s 2007 Office of International Programs Faculty International Development Grant ($800); as well as JMU’s 2007 Center for Assessment and Research Studies Assessment Faculty Fellowship ($5,000).

Bill Evans received a grant from Academic Affairs for the International Personal Meaning Conference ($5,000). Dr. Evans also recieved two grants to attend the Viktor Frankl Institute from Office of International Programs, and CISAT ($500 and $1,000 respectively).

Joann Grayson received a continuing grant from the Virginia Department of Social Services to produce the Virginia Child Protection Newsletter ($43,500).

Charles Harris received a grant from JMU’s General Education Summer Grants Committee for a project entitled “Honoring Cultural Diversity Globally” ($2,225). Also through JMU, he received two grants to Develop Information Literacy Modules for GPSYC 101, 160 & SOCI 240 from Carrier Library and the General Education Program ($2,500 and $3,750 respectively). He also was awarded a seed grant from CISAT for Concept Mapping software ($200), and a grant through the Center for Faculty Innovation for an online workshop “The Learning Process and Collaborative Technologies” ($350). The Commonwealth of Virginia awarded him with a grant to provide a Professional Development Course for teachers working in the Department of Corrections ($4,200).

Jessica Irons received a CISAT Research grant entitled “Contingency Management of Smoking Cessation Among Adolescents” ($4,000).

Natalie Lawrence received a grant from Worth Publishers to help support the Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, to be held in June, 2008 ($2,000).

Aashir Nasim received a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation for a project entitled “Pathways to Smoking among African American Adolescents: Family, Contextual, and Cultural Factors” ($1,500).

Zewelanji Serpell received a grant from the Virginia Commonwealth University for a project entitled “Preventing Youth Tobacco Use by Treating the Risk-Factor of ADHD: A One Year Follow-up Study of Adolescents with ADHD” ($39,964). Dr. Serpell also received a grant continuation from the Virginia Commonwealth University for a project entitled “Preventing Youth Tobacco Use by Treating the Risk-Factor of ADHD: A One Year Follow-up Study of Adolescents with ADHD” ($18,231).

Sherry Serdikoff received a CISAT Research grant entitled “Cigarette Smoking at JMU:  Characterization and Contingency Management” ($4,000).

Cheryl Talley received a grant from the Commonwealth Health Research Board for a project entitled “Understanding Transcriptional Changes of Nitric Oxide Synthase I Leading to Diabetes” ($90,000); as well as, funding from JMU’s Center for Faculty Innovation to attend Boot Camp for Professors ($2,000).  She also received funding from CISAT’s Diversity Committee to attend the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) ($2,000).
