2005 - 2006 Academic Year Service Activities

Jeff Andre served as the Chair of the General Education Council for the 2005-2006 academic year. He worked with Expert Witness Consulting to help lawyers in VA on accident/civil court cases, and provided expert opinions on visual perception-related issues. He is a peer reviewer of research manuscripts for Lighting Research and Technology and for Human Factors. He is also a reviewer of ALEKS Corporation (Statistics website). He was a judge for the 2006 Shenandoah Valley Regional Science Fair

Kenn Barron was appointed to the Editorial Board for the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 2005-2007. He was also appointed to the Editorial Board from the Journal of Experimental Education, 2006-2008. He is an ad hoc reviewer for the following journals: British journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Personality, Journal of personality and Social Psychology, Learning and Instruction, and Motivation and Emotion. He is a journal reviewer for the Journal of Experimental Education and for Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. He was also a reviewer for AERA for the 2005 National Conference and he was a computer statistical software reviewer for ALEKS for behavioral Science Statistics. Kenn Barron also conducted a workshop on Assessing Achievement Goals in Pre-service Teachers for JMU’s College of Education’s Assessment Committee.

Jim Benedict served as a board member for the Central Valley Habitat for Humanity. He is a reviewer for Perceptual Motor Skills.

Bill Evans was a volunteer for counseling couples, families and individuals for the Pastoral Counseling Service. He participated in the 5k Race to Raise Funds and Awareness for Katrina Relief for the JMU Katrina Relief organization. He also helped with fundraising for Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and Mercy Corps for the JMU Food Fight Against Hunger organization and for the American Cancer Society for the JMU Relay for Life. He coordinated the nomination of Jan Yoder for the Heritage Award for outstanding teaching (and she won). Bill Evans served as Book Series Editor for the Society for the Psychology of Women and was a reviewer for the Psychology of Women Quartley and for Violence and Victims and was on the Editorial Board for Sex Roles.

The Challenging Horizons Program, led by Steve Evans, will receive this year’s National Innovative Program of the Year award from Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). Steve Evans is on the Board of Directors for the Center for School Mental Health Analysis. Steve Evans was appointed member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Attention Disorders. He is also an editor of the Report on Emotional and Behavioral Disorders in Youth. He was an investigator for the Mosier fellowship project. He consulted on the diagnostic procedures for ADHD and other ADHD related measurement issues, and on the interpretation of findings. He played significant roles in the development of the annual Raising the Bar Conference at JMU, and the JumpStart summer day camp for youth with ADHD.

Pam Gibson serves as a reviewer for Health Care for Women International and a consultant for individuals MCS and their helpers.

Joann Grayson was a member of the Virginia Department of Social Services committee that wrote the state prevention plan that was completed during Fall, 2006.

Michael Hall serves in the Southeastern Region Steering Committee and the Diversity Task Force for Psi Chi. He is also a reviewer for the J.P. Guilford Undergraduate Research Awards for Psi Chi. He is also a reviewer for the journal Music Perception.

Charles Huffman served as a reviewer for Prentice Hall Publishers.

Natalie Kerr Lawrence, Bryan Saville & Tracy Zinn are moderators for PsychTeacher. Psych Teacher is a moderated discussion list for teachers of psychology owned by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and hosted by Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw GA.

Natalie Kerr Lawrence served on a task force for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, charged with developing a set of recommended strategies that will serve to (a) increase the visibility of the scholarship of teaching (SoT), (b) increase recognition of SoT, and (c) elevate perceptions of SoT such that the work is valued as much as research in more traditional domains. She served as a judge at the 2005 meeting of the Virginia Junior Academy of Science and she is a reviewer for the journal Teaching of Psychology.

Aashir Nasim has been appointed Coordinator of Faculty Recruitment and Retention for JMU’s Office of the Special Assistant to the President. He served as a panelist for the 2006 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. He serves as an editorial consultant and an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Black Psychology. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Minority Psychology, Journal of Youth & Adolescence, and Social Science & Medicine.

Monica Reis-Bergan is a board member of the Boys and Girls Club. She is a member of the Broadway High School Transitions Program in which she coordinates volunteers, and develops and analyzes surveys.

Bryan Saville has been asked to serve on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Association for Behavior Analysis. He has been appointed to serve a 3-year term as Chair of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP) Teaching Awards Committee He served as a judge for poster presentations given at the 2006 NITOP conference in St. Petersburg, FL. He is a member of the STP E-Publishing Task Force, which was charged with developing a protocol for publishing books on the STP Web site, as well as a member of STP’s Teaching Excellence Awards Committee. He is also member of the American Psychological Society Teaching Fund Steering Committee (PSYCONF), which is a discussion listed devoted to developing regional conferences on the teaching of psychology. He was program co-chair for the 2nd annual Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis (VABA) and served as co-editor of “E-xcellence in Teaching,” an online teaching column hosted by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of APA) and published monthly on the PsychTeacher discussion list (2003-present) .Bryan Saville served as a guest reviewer for Teaching of Psychology and for the Psychological Record.

Sherry Serdikoff serves as Program Director of JMU’s Masters in Psychological Sciences Program. She is a member of the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis organization in which she help to organize the 2nd conference and is the coordinator for Behavior Analysis Certification Board Continuing Education Units. She is serves on the Board of Editors for The Behavior Analyst Today. She was a judge for the 2006 Shenandoah Valley Regional Science Fair.

Zewe Serpell held a workshop for graduate students on How to Choose a Career Path at Howard University’s Department of Psychology. She held workshops for parents, teachers, and mental health professionals at ALDC and T-TAC’s annual “Raising the Bar: Improving the Standard of Care for Individuals with ADHD” conference. She also participated in all planning and organizing activity for this conference. She is an active participant in the ADHD Parent Advocacy Group providing ongoing guidance and support, including identifying/securing/coordinating speakers for this community-based group’s monthly meetings.

Cheryl Talley was a textbook proposal reviewer for Prentice Hall Psychology, and an article reviewer for Hormones and Behavior. She taught Life Span and Development at Old Dominion Job Corps Center, Monroe, VA.

Richard West is an ad hoc reviewer for the following journals: Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Memory & Cognition, and Thinking & Reasoning.

Tracy Zinn has been appointed to the role of Coordinator of the Departmental Consulting Service (DCS). The Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the American Psychological Association’s Board of Educational Affairs jointly administer this service, which assists undergraduate departments in locating consultants for such activities as program evaluation. She is a member of STP ad hoc committee for E-publishing task force. She was a Steering committee member for the conference planning committee for Engaging Minds: Best Practices in Teaching Critical Thinking. She was the co-program chair for the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis and is on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Association for Behavior Analysis. Tracy Zinn is a reviewer for Teaching of Psychology and for Psychological Bulletin. She is also the Co-editor of a monthly E-xcellence in Teaching column in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology.
