Other Achievements

The Department of Psychology Student Symposium was held on April 17, 2006 . Thirty six posters authored by 92 students were presented. The complete program is available here. The following students were selected for awards:

  • Stacey Langsner was the winner of the Dean’s Award for Best Honors Thesis Poster: “The Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Music on Relaxation States and Reading Comprehension” Advisor: Dr. Monica Reis-Bergan
  • Lauren Childs, Courtney Johnson, Kristen McDonough, and Jennifer Polasek were the winners of the Dean’s Award for Best Field Practicum Poster: “Multi-Sensory Therapy for Elderly Residents: The Snoezelen Program” Advisor: Dr. Joann Grayson
  • Janie Webb, Andrew Hucks, M. Bradley Kincheloe, and Daniel Hoffman were the winners of the Dean’s Award for Best Research Poster: “Assessing Reinforcement Mechanisms in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)” Advisor: Dr. Sherry Serdikoff
  • Melissa Zaleski, Elizabeth Dalianis, and Andrew Hucks received the Award for Excellent Honors Thesis Poster: “Programmed Instruction vs. Programmed Instruction Combined with Interteaching” Advisor: Dr. Sherry Serdikoff

  • Lauren Tritle received the Award for Excellent Practice of Psychology Poster: “First Step: A Response to Domestic Violence, Inc.” Advisor: Dr. Joann Grayson
  • Tara Ward, Aaron Whitehead, Monica Wiggins, Chiquita Cross, and Carla Johnson were winners of the Award for Excellent Research Poster: “African American Students’ Evaluation of their Experiences in JMU’s Transitions Program” Advisor: Dr. Zewe Serpell
  • Terry Houser and Kevin Knicely were winners of the Award for Excellent Research Poster “Maximizing, Satisfying, and Delay Discounting in College Students” Advisor: Dr. Bryan Saville

Sarah Gottlieb* was the winner of the Meredith Green Best Undergraduate Poster Award at the recent meetings of the Virginia Psychological Association for her poster presented with Dr. Sheena Rogers entitled Exploring the Affective Responses to Art.

Stacy Langsner* has been selected as the Department of Psychology nomination for the Phi Beta Kappa Best Thesis Award. Her thesis, “The Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation on Relaxation States and Reading Comprehension,” has been described by our nomination committee as interesting, important, clearly focused, and well designed. Her thesis advisor was Dr. Monica Reis-Bergan.
