2004-2005 Academic Year Achievements

The following faculty received certificates at the August 23, 2004 meeting of the Department of Psychology for their outstanding performance last year as determined by the Department’s Personnel Advisory Committee (PAC) and Department Head:

  • Jeff Andre, Outstanding Teaching, Scholarship and Service in the Department of Psychology
  • Bill Evans, Outstanding Teaching in the Department of Psychology
  • Aashir Nasim, Department of Psychology Outstanding Assistant Professor Award

The following faculty have been nominated for College of Integrated Science and Techology (CISAT) awards:

  • Jim Benedict, CISAT Distinguished Teacher
  • Steve Evans, CISAT Madison Scholar
  • Monica Reis-Bergan, CISAT Outstanding Junior Faculty
  • Sherry Serdikoff, CISAT Distinguished Service Award

Charles Harris and Bill Evans were nominated for membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by the student leadership of the JMU chapter. Psychology Major Christine Yip currently serves as President of NSCS.

Charles Harris was selected to be one of the 2004-2005 Madison Teaching Fellows.

Craig Abrahamson has been accepted to serve as a faculty member for the University of Pittsburg, Semester at Sea Program for the Fall 2005 semester. He will be teaching three courses while visiting countries around the globe.

Bill Evans has been promoted from Lieutenant Colonel to Full Colonel in the Air National Guard. Effective January 1, he will be appointed as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Command Chaplain, Air Combat Command. This promotion is a significant honor, and the appointment makes Bill responsible to the head of the Chaplain in charge of the Chaplain corps of the Air National Guard, responsible for all reserve office Chaplains in the Air Combat Command who are stationed around the world. Bill completed the United States Air Force Air Mar College in July, 2004 as part of the training required to assume this new leadership position.

JoAnne Brewster and Michael Stoloff each received the “Premio Psiche 2004,” an award “per il particolare contributo internazionale offerto alle scienze chriminologiche” for their contributions to the advancement of international cooperation in the field of forensic psychology. The award was given at the conclusion of the first international conference of the Society of Police and Criminal Psychology held in Rome, Italy, in October 2004.

Jim Benedict was nominated by the Department of Psychology for the 2005 Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching Award. This award recognizes career-long devotion and contributions to teaching of psychology. We believe Jim is a very strong candidate for this American Psychological Foundation (APF) award. Our belief was supported by strong letters of support especially from former students who are now doctoral-level psychologists who clearly indicated that Jim provided substantial inspiration and support for their career decisions and development.

JoAnne Brewster was nominated by the Department of Graduate Psychology and selected by the College of Integrated Science and Technology to be a Madison Scholar.

Joann Grayson has been selected to receive the 2005 Commissioner’s Award for Virginia from the Administration on Children, Youth and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. One individual may be recognized from each state may be selected for this honor.

Arnie Kahn's research was cited in the February 2005 issue of Cosmopolitan (page 164). The magazine reported that a disturbing number of rape victims excuse away a sexual assault because, according to Arnie's research, "the majority of women wh are sexually assaulted don't recognize that they've been victimized."

Aashir Nasim, in addition to continuing at JMU, has accepted the position of Affiliate Research Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Psychology, Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention (CCEP), Richmond, VA.

Kenn Barron was nominated in 2005 for “Who’s Who Among American Teachers."
