Summer 2013 Registration Information

Department of Psychology Summer 2013 class schedule.  The following courses will be offered during Summer 2013.  (Note that summer offerings are dependent upon budget, faculty availability, and student enrollment):

• Gpsyc 160, Life Span Human Development (Sections offered:  1st 4 weeks and online)
• Psyc 180, Introduction to Behavior Analysis (1st 4 weeks)
• Psyc 200, Mental Toughness (online)
• Psyc 210*, Psyc Statistics (Sections offered:  1st 4 weeks and online)
• Psyc 211, Psyc Research Methods (Sections offered:  May 13 – June 21 and 2nd 4 weeks)
• Psyc 250, Introduction to Abnormal Psychology (Sections offered:  1st 4 weeks and online):  This course is not appropriate for JMU Psychology majors
• Psyc 308, Health Psychology (online).  This course meets the sociocultural awareness requirement for the psychology major.
• Psyc 316, Human Development and Crime (Sections offered:  1st 4 weeks and 2nd 4 weeks)
• Psyc 365, Developmental Psychology (online)
• Psyc 375, Sensation & Perception (online)
• Psyc 380, Cognitive Psychology (Sections offered: 1st 4 weeks and online)
• Psyc 385, Biopsychology (2nd 4 weeks)

• Psyc 460, Community Psychology in Developing Societies (1st 4 weeks).  This course meets the sociocultural awareness requirement for the psychology major.
• Psyc 497, Senior Seminar: Addictive Behaviors (1st 4 weeks)

*Regarding registration for Psyc 210.  Ordinarily registration for Psyc 210 is limited to admitted psychology majors only.  However, for summer session, psychology majors who are declared but not admitted will be considered.  To be considered, apply for full admission to the psychology major and submit an override request for the class using our form available online.

Senior Seminars

• Psyc 497, Section 4101. Addictive Behavior. This course will give students the opportunity to apply and integrate their experiences and knowledge in psychology to the study of the initiation, maintenance, prevention and treatment of addictive behaviors. The course will explore biological, learned, cognitive and socio-cultural factors that contribute to, maintain and impact the treatment of addictions. Dr. Monica Reis-Bergan (568-4365; Miller 1145; reisbemj@jmu.edu) will offer this course during the first 4-week session.

Special Opportunities

• Psyc 200.  Mental Toughness.  Available this summer online!  This course focuses on the psychological construct of mental toughness and its application in sport and life.  The emphasis of the course will be on gaining an understanding of mental toughness and knowledge about the attributes of an ideally mentally tough performer. Students will learn what mental toughness is, the characteristics that a mentally tough performer possesses, and strategies to improve their own level of mental toughness for sport or life.  Students will engage in a combination of course readings, class discussion, and hands-on learning experiences.  This course is open to all JMU students.  No prerequisites.  Offered by Dr. Robert Harmison (568-7959; harmisrj@jmu.edu )
• Gsci 104.  Scientific Perspective:  Science and Pseudoscience (Dr. Zinn).  This course meets General Education Cluster 3 requirements with psychology laboratory experiences.
• Gsci 104. Scientific Perspectives: Vision and Driving (Dr. Andre).  This course meets General Education Cluster 3 requirements with psychology laboratory experiences

Psyc 211 Prerequisite for Content Core Courses

If space is available, the following Psychology Content Core Classes may permit selected students to complete Psyc 211 concurrently.  If you would like to take a course that is open for which you don’t have the prerequisites, you can apply for an override during initial registration.
