Overrides and Exceptions for Psyc Courses
The Department of Psychology is no longer accepting overrides using our online form. We are busy making decisions and notifying students who have requested overrides. We hope to complete this process before Thanksgiving break.
If you have satisfied the prerequisites for the course you want to take, but are not granted an override, watch e-campus during the course adjustment period that began is underway and continues through the first week of school in January. Add courses for which you have the prerequisites if they become available.
Any overrides that have been issued by our office during the past 2 weeks will expire on November 29, so some additional spaces in many classes may open on November 30.
Continue to watch e-campus over the winter holiday and take advantage of any seats that become available. If you are still not in the class you would like to take when school begins in January, you are welcome to visit the first class meeting of the course you would like to take and ask the instructor for an override at that time.
This policy applies to all spring semester undergraduate psychology courses except those that are listed as “instructor permission required” in the schedule of classes. You should see the course instructor if you want to register for Psyc 290, 302, 401, 402, 495 or 499.
Students are encouraged to visit the Peer Advising Office (Miller 1106) and their Academic Advisors before registering for courses. Remember that psychology courses tend to fill quickly, so it is an advantage to register at the soonest opportunity and pick suitable courses the first time. Try to find open courses that fit your interests and graduation requirements. Don't depend upon overrides to create your schedule.
Regarding Psyc 210
You must be a Fully-Admitted Psychology Major (not a Psychology-Declared student) to register for Psyc 210 (Psychological Statistics). Students who want to enroll in Psyc 210 who are not currently Fully-Admitted Psychology Majors should apply during the Fall semester by attending a Psychology Admission Application Session (PAAS). After grades are available for the Fall Semester, your application to become a Fully-Admitted Psychology Major will be reviewed. If you are accepted, you will be able to register for Psyc 210 in January. See more information at this link: http://www.psyc.jmu.edu/undergraduate/overridesexceptions.html
Area Course Prerequisites
Completion of Psyc 211 or 213 is recommended before students take Psychology Area Courses (Psyc 330-395), because you are likely to be able to understand the content of these courses more deeply if you have a good working knowledge of research methodology before you study area course content. Some Area Courses have specific assignments that require you to have skills developed in our methods courses, so prerequisites are strictly enforced. For some Area Courses, if space is available, faculty will permit selected students to take their course concurrently with Psyc 211 or 213. Special permission is more likely if you are an advanced student and if you have had other prior experiences that are relevant to the course you want to take early (such as biology experience for Psyc 395 or behavior analysis experience for Psyc 390). A list of Area Courses for which concurrent registration in Psyc 211 or 213 will be considered if space is available after all students who have completed these courses have registered appears on the Spring Registration page.
