Transfer Student Information

All newly admitted transfer students who want to become Psychology Majors should declare psychology.

To declare:

Transfer students typically declare the psychology major as part of the Transfer Student One Book process.  Attend transfer orientation to determine if you have the course requirements to immediately be fully-admitted to our major.  If you do not have the course requirements then you will need to apply later, and you will be treated as current students.

All students are allowed to declare the Psychology Major, and are permitted to take GPSYC 101 (General Psychology), GPSYC 160 (Life-span and Human Development), GPSYC 122 (Vision and Audition), as well as certain other psychology courses. However, to make progress in the major beyond the first few courses, students need to apply and be admitted to the major.

To become fully-admitted:

If at the time of transfer orientation, you meet the following criteria, you will be fully admitted to the major:

  1. Transfer in at least 30 credits including the prerequisite courses (General Psychology and 200-level Math) or General Psychology and either Psychological Statistics or Research Methods in Psychology.
  2. Complete an online orientation to the major

Transfer students who have not met these criteria prior to enrolling at JMU may declare Psychology and should apply for admission to the Psychology Major during their first semester while they are completing GPSYC 101 and the Math requirement. More Information.

Special Note for Transfer Students.  After admission to the psychology major it takes at least 4 semesters to graduate from JMU, so it is strongly recommended that you complete the required introductory psychology and math courses prior to admission.
