Getting Help

First-year students have a freshman advisor. Sophomores through Seniors who have declared the Psychology Major have a Department of Psychology faculty member as their advisor. Contact Colleen Moynihan (568-6114, Miller 1122, E-mail: ugpsyc@jmu.edu), if you can’t remember the name of your academic advisor. You might also consider asking your course instructors questions.

In the Department of Psychology, once classes begin, override requests are issued by each course instructor. (During advance registration, exceptions and permission to register for closed classes are handled by the Psychology Office.)

If you can’t get the answers you need from Peer Advising or faculty, feel free to contact one of the Assistant Department Heads of our department, Kevin Apple (568-3696; Miller 1127; applekj@jmu.edu) or Suzanne Baker (568-7832; Miller 1125; bakersc@jmu.edu). Special permission for alternatives to the standard academic program, such as transferring psychology courses from other universities is granted by our Assistant Department Heads.

JMU's Career and Academic Planning Office invites all Psychology students to participate in their events and take advantage of their services.

The Psychology Peer Advisors can help students declare the Psychology Major, help Psychology Majors plan their program of study, and help everyone learn more about career opportunities for students interested in Psychology and Counseling. Their office in Miller 1106 is open Monday-Wednesday 10-4, Thursday 10-5, and Friday 10-12. Contact them on AIM at PeerAdvising or e-mail peeradvise@yahoo.com .
