Call for Pictures. This summer the Department of Psychology will be updating our web site and preparing to make better use of the new digital signs in Miller Hall. We would like to collect pictures of students and faculty participating in psychology-related events, service projects, and conferences. If you have pictures that you would like to share and can give us permission to use these pictures in public including on the Internet, please send them bring them to Miller 1120 or attach them to an e-mail sent to ugpsyc@jmu.edu . For pictures of individuals and small groups, please include the names of individuals depicted in your pictures for the captions!

New Miller Hall Open Hours. The outside doors to Miller Hall will be open during extended hours to give students access to labs within the building. Here are the new hours:
MONDAY–THURSDAY: 7 am – Midnight
FRIDAY: 7 am – 6 pm
SATURDAY: 12 noon – 6 pm
SUNDAY: 12 noon – Midnight
The building will be closed on the weekends during student holidays and breaks.
Paid Research Assistant Position. The Talley lab islooking for summer animal care help.The duties include caring for a small population of rats that are being used in a collaborative study with colleagues in Biology.The study examines the relationshipbetweendiabetes and obesity.Duties include cage washing, using a newly installed automated cage washer; regular feeding andwater maintenance and some surgical procedures.We would like to hire someone who is interested in continuing on with the project next year. An interest in animal models of diabetes and/or a desire to learn molecular biological techniques would be helpful. This is a part-time grant-funded position. Students should contact Dr. Cheryl Talley (talleyce@jmu.edu) if interested.
Law and Psychology Program. The University of Nebraska/Lincoln has developed a one-year program for undergraduates sponsored by the National Science Foundation This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program brings 8 to 10 undergraduate students to UNL to study law and psychology in their program for a full year. Undergraduate students are provided with room and board, along with a stipend for working in their law and psychology research laboratories. Students work with law and psychology doctoral (JD/Ph.D and MLS/Ph.D.) students. Faculty mentor these undergraduate students, helping them gain valuable experience to assist in preparing them for graduate school in psychology. Students who apply early will have an advantage in this competitive selection process.
American Psychological Association Conference. Students and faculty can now register for the Annual Meetings of the American Psychological Association to be held in Boston, August 14-17. See http://www.apa.org/convention08/ for more information.

The Department of Psychology is now in Miller Hall! On December 17 all of the offices and departmental labs were moved from Johnston, Cleveland and other campus locations to Miller Hall. If you need us, that’s where we will be. Here are some key locations:

Conference Poster Printing The Department of Psychology is pleased to make funds available to produce posters for Psychology Majors who will be presenting their research at professional conferences. Because funds are limited, students may not receive funding for more than one, 3’ x 4’, $36 poster per academic year.(Students may print additional posters or larger posters at their own expense, but can receive the CISAT discount by applying through the Department of Psychology.) Posters are printed by the CISAT Copy Center. To receive permission to have your poster printed at the expense of the Department of Psychology, or to receive the CISAT discount for posters that you pay for yourself, submit an application two weeks before your poster is needed. Scholarships are available through the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). Every Cadet in the JMU ROTC program today has their education funded by the Army. Cadets may opt for either tuition or room and board scholarships. Cadets on a tuition scholarship receive an additional $900 for books. Moreover, all Cadets receive a monthly stipend ($300 for freshmen, $350 for sophomores, $450 for juniors, and $500 seniors). The Psychology Major described in the 2006 JMU Catalog includes significant requirement changes. Only students who began at JMU in August 2006 are affected by these changes. All students who began at JMU prior to August 2006 (regardless of when you were admitted to the Psychology Major) should follow the requirements listed in your academic catalog; your program is not changed and you are not required to fulfill requirements specified for the 2006 Psychology Major.

MadisonTRAK, a service of JMU’s Career and Academic Planning (CAP) Office provides students with many opportunities to identify career objectives, develop resumes and interviewing skills, and make connections with potential internship and employment recruiters . Register your interests . The Council on Undergraduate Research has established a Registry of Undergraduate Researchers to facilitate matchmaking between undergraduates with research experience who wish to pursue an advanced degree and graduate schools seeking high quality students who are well prepared for research. Currently the Registry is open to students and graduate schools/employers in nearly all the fields of science that are supported at NSF. Undergraduate students who are currently in their JUNIOR YEAR should register. You can update your listing at the end of the summer of 2006 and during their senior year, to include any additional information. The undergraduate registry can be accessed at www.cur.org/ugreg. There is no charge for this service. Information will be made available only to graduate schools that contract with CUR for this service. Organizations or companies seeking the students' information for other marketing purposes will not be granted access
