Psychology Major Admission

All students are allowed to declare the Psychology Major, and are permitted to take GPsyc 101 (General Psychology) and GPsyc 160 (Life-span and Human Development) as well as certain other psychology courses. However, to make progress in the major beyond the first few courses, students need to apply and be admitted to the major.

To declare the Psychology Major, simply visit Colleen Moynihan in Miller 1120 and complete a change of major form.  There are no restrictions on students declaring the Psychology Major.

Students who would like to apply for admission to the Psychology Major at the end of the Fall 2009 semester must attend a mandatory Psychology Admission Application Session (PAAS).  All students who are currently enrolled in Gpsyc 101 and the required math course as well as students who have already completed these courses should visit the Peer Advising Office (Miller 1106) to sign up for one of the following sessions:

  • Monday, November 16, 5 PM
  • Friday, December 4, 4 PM

You will learn the location of these sessions when you sign up in the Peer Advising Office. After grades are available for the Fall Semester, applications to become a Fully-Admitted Psychology Majors will be reviewed, and if you are accepted, in January you will be able to register for Psyc 210 and other courses reserved for admitted psychology majors only.

If you have questions, feel free to contact Colleen Moynihan (568-6114, Miller 1122; ugpsyc@jmu.edu).

Psychology Major Admission Requirements

If you would like to make progress in the Psychology Major, please complete the courses required for admission to the major as soon as possible. Students must complete Gpsyc 101 and Math 205, 220, 231 or 235 with a C- or better before they can be fully admitted to the Psychology Major. Math 220 (Elementary Statistics) is the recommended math course, but Math 205, 231 or 235 (Calculus) will also satisfy psychology major admission requirements. While not recommended for students who have not yet completed their math prerequisites, COB 191, GISAT 141 and GISAT 151, and Math 011 all are acceptable prerequisite mathematics courses for applicants to the Psychology Major. Equivalent coursework taken at other schools and AP or IB credit will be accepted.

Students who took Math 200-level BEFORE Spring 2006 only need a D in their Math course to be accepted into the major. As long as the student's cumulative GPA is 2.6 or better at the time of application review, they will be accepted into the major. All students who take their Math course during the Spring 2006 semester or after need to earn a C- or better in their 200-level Math course to be accepted into the major.
