2009-2010 Academic Year Service Activities

Craig Abrahamson is serving the third term as member of the Executive Board and Chairman of the Membership Committee of the International Society for Explorations in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (ISETL).  He also works as a trainer for Team River Runner a kayaking program for amputee veterans with post traumatic stress disorder symptoms. Dr. Abrahamson volunteers every other weekend with the Oakland Medical Clinic providing psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families with social, physical, and emotional trauma.

David Daniel is the Managing Editor for the journal Mind, Brain, and Education.  Dr. Daniel serves as the Chair of the Teaching Committee of the Society for Research in Child Development, and also serves as the coordinator for their Teaching of Developmental Science Institute.  He also serves as a member of several STP committees (APA Div. 2).

Kimberly DuVall is an advisory member for the Challenge Program of Rockingham County Public Schools as well as an advisory member of Parent Advisory Council of Spotswood High School.  She is also a reviewer for the John W. Santrock's text - A Topical Approach to Life-Span Development.

Joann Grayson is a member of the Pilot Club. This group works to raise awareness and increase services for persons with brain injury. She has also been featured in a display by the Virginia Library Association as one of the 2009 Virginia Women of History. Eight women were selected for their lifetime contributions to the Commonwealth of Virginia and they are featured in a display that travels to Virginia libraries. She was also featured in articles in the American Psychological Association Monitor and in the Summer 2009 issue of Madison Magazine.

Jessica Irons serves on the G. Stanley Hall and Harold Kirk Wolfe Nomination Committee, Excellence in Teaching Awards Committee, Grants Activities Taskforce, the Working Group to Respond to the Principles for Quality Undergraduate Education in Psychology, and is Chair of Task Force to examine the use of Undergraduate Teaching Assistants for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association). Dr. Irons also serves as a committee member for the Virginia Association of Behavior Analysis (VABA) planning committee. Jessica will participate as a representative of the Society of the Teaching of Psychology (APA Div 2.) for the 8th annual APA Education Leadership Conference.

Arnie Kahn is the Book Review Editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly.  He serves the Society for the Psychology of Women (APA Division 35), as a member of the Tangri Memorial Award Committee. Dr. Kahn served on the search committee for a new Secretary/Treasurer for APA Division 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues). He serves as an editorial board member for the journal Sex Roles and serves as a frequent reviewer for Journal of Interpersonal Violence.  He continues to serve as a member of the Women’s Studies Advisory Committee.

Natalie Lawrence is chair of the planning committee for the Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology (ETOP). She is also a reviewer for the journal Teaching of Psychology.

Michael Stoloff is the webmaster and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology. He is on the Board of Directors of the Association of Heads of Departments of Psychology. He has been certified as a consultant for the American Psychological Association’s Departmental Consulting Service.

Judy West facilitated a Center for Faculty Innovation roundtable for part-time faculty at JMU on August 17, 2009.

Krisztina Varga is part of JMU's Bridge Program, which helps prepare high school seniors for college. This year she is co-teaching General Psychology at Clarke County High School in Berryville, Virginia.  Dr. Varga is on the review panel for the Biennial International Conference on Infant Studies which will be held in Baltimore, Maryland in March. 

Tracy Zinn is currently the program coordinator for the Association for Psychological Sciences (APS) Teaching Institute, and also serves on the general program committee for APS’s annual meeting.  She is an advisor for the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies (CCBS), a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the scientific study of behavior and its humane application to the solution of practical problems and the prevention and relief of human suffering.  She is a member of the Teaching Awards Committee for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP). Tracy also serves as a consulting editor for the journal Teaching of Psychology, and as a liaison between the Organizational Behavior Management Network and STP. She is program co-chair for the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis and is serving as a program reviewer for both the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (APA Div. 14), and Behavior Analysis (APA Div. 25). Tracy serves as the faculty advisor for Gamma Sigma Sigma, a service sorority of JMU, and SuperSibs, an organization (new to JMU) that supports siblings of kids with cancer.
