Peer Advising

Peer Advisers are advanced Psychology students who are trained to provide academic and career information to Psychology Majors and prospective students. They conduct individual sessions with students, group informational sessions, contribute to the Psychology newsletter, and serve as ambassadors of the Department of Psychology Majors at special events. Students train to be peer advisers during their Junior year and serve as advisers, assisting with the training of new students during their senior year. Two credits per semester are earned using these training and service experiences. For more information, contact the Peer Advising Office in Miller 1106, 568-6214.

Peer Advising

• PSYC 301-302. Peer Advising Training (2 credit hours/ semester). Peer Advising Training is available to Junior Psychology Majors with competitive GPA's. Peer advisers operate a peer-counseling office within the Department of Psychology described below under PSYC 401. Applications are accepted during the Spring semester to begin training in the Fall. For more information, inquire at the Peer Advising Office in Miller 1106. This course does not count towards the 38 hours required for the Psychology Major.
• PSYC 401. Peer Advising (2 credit hours/semester, may be taken twice). This course is available to students who have completed PSYC 301-302, Peer Advising Training. Students enrolled in this course are Peer Advisers, and the leaders of the department's Peer Advising Program. Peer advisers operate a peer-counseling office within the Department of Psychology. They assist fellow students with career decision-making, course selection, major and minor requirements, applying to graduate school, and applying for jobs. Peer advisers participate in projects that enhance the career and graduate school preparatory experiences of Psychology Majors with a variety of activities including conducting workshops. For more information inquire at the Peer Advising Office in Miller 1106. This course can count as a 400-level elective for Psychology Majors.
