Two School Psychology alumnae win award!
The Virginia Academy of School Psychologists announced their 2004 awards, and the following department alumnae have been honored:
- SUSAN MAGOWAN BLACK is the recipient of the "Outstanding Graduate Student of the year in School Psychology" award. Susan will be recognized at the VASP luncheon on October 21st at the VPA conference in Richmond. The award carries a stipend as well. Susan excelled in many arenas as a graduate student: serving on the VASP board as a student representative and later as membership chair; conducting research on second language learners that is being shared professionally at VPA and NASP; and demonstrating exceptional clinical insight in addition to a positive spirit in her work with children and school personnel.
- BETSY BROWN has been named "School Psychologist of the Year" for 2004, and will also be honored at VPA this Thursday. Betsy is a school psychologist for Shenandoah County public schools who has served as a mentor and supervisor for JMU interns and practicum students for years. Betsy demonstrates best practice in all areas of her work, and has beenrecognized by her school superintendent for her professional development and collaborative efforts for all personnel. Betsy recently organized a regional support group of school psychologists to support beginning professionals and to keep abreast of current practice issues.
Please join me in congratulating Susan and Betsy on their accomplishments. They are inspirations for us all!
Miller Hall
The department is working hard to develop a plan to occupy the top floor of a renovated Miller Hall in fall 2008. Education’s classrooms, labs and the ETMC will occupy part of the building for two years while Roop Hall is being renovated.
