C-I Doc students facilitate Building Multicultural Competency Workshop
April 14th 2005
Salmaan Khawaja, Chase Levesque, Debbie Thurneck, Devi Bhuyan, Heather Gow, Jenn Gilbert, Leticia Solorzano, Joanie Rankin, Megan Fiore and Rituma Patel (first and second year C-I students) served as facilitators in the undergraduate HHS 'Building Multicultural Competency Workshop' in fall and spring this academic year. In the past a few CI students would facilitate, but this year the opportunity was incorporated into the program. Emily Akerson, Cheryl Talley, and Marilyn Wakefield all took time to conduct special training/orientation sessions in the fall for the students (coming during our 825 class time).
A group of CI students have volunteered to continue to work with the faculty committee to develop materials and exercises to be considered for use in the training. This type of work helps our students grow in their intercultural competencies and be better prepared to work across cultures, here and abroad.
In a note to Anne and Harriet, Emily Akerson wrote that the students' contribution was greatly appreciated, and that she noticed that there were a number of references to the excellent facilitators in the evaluations of the workshop.
I am proud of our students and grateful for the exceptional faculty who provided this training opportunity for our students.
