On Friday, November 8, at the Virginia Counselors Association Annual Convention's Awards Luncheon, two members of our JMU Counseling faculty, one alumna, a current student, and the members of our local chapter were all honored!  Sandy Hite received the John R. Cook Award in recognition of her long and meritorious history with VCA.  She was also recognized as the Virginia Alliance for School Counseling Division Member of the Year.  Renee Staton was given the William H. Van Hoose Career Service Award for the advancement of VCA's professional goals and contributions to the understanding of counseling.  Jenn Kurbel, a JMU alumna, was honored as the Central Valley Counselors Association (CVCA) Chapter Member of the Year.  Thom Field, one of our doctoral students, received the Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (VACES) Division Member of the Year.  And continuing its amazing string of four years in a row, Central Valley Counselors Association (CVCA) was recognized as the Large Chapter of the Year.

Sandy is the epitome of a true school counselor, a tireless promoter of the profession, an inspiring example to colleagues, and an outstanding mentor of counseling students.  She has vigorously supported both VCA and CVCA in countless ways throughout a distinguished career that has been characterized by dedicated involvement in professional service.

As a leader, Renee has fulfilled an impressive array of roles—booster, organizer, advocate, and diplomat—in charting the most promising course for any professional organization, energizing its members, and building a productive team.  Renee has served in numerous vital roles, including president, board member, and editorial board member of the Virginia Counselors Association Journal.  She is an inspirational counselor educator, dedicated leader, and unstinting advocate who richly deserved this recognition for her commitment to the counseling profession.

Jenn is a dynamo who has been a wonderful sparkplug for CVCA.  She has served many roles in the chapter and is one of the reasons for its stellar performance in recent years.

Thom has done an outstanding job of organizing the finances of VACES and coordinating its most successful annual conference ever, which was held this past February at JMU.

Congratulations to Sandy, Renee, Jenn, Thom, and all the members of CVCA!
